Muscle Strain
Muscle strain, also known as a muscle pull or overextension, occurs when the muscles or tendons (the fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones) are overstretched or torn. In the context of spine health, muscle strains commonly affect the muscles in the lower back, neck, and shoulders due to poor posture, overuse, improper lifting, or sudden movements.

Causes of Muscle Strain in the Spine
- Poor Posture: Sitting or standing in improper positions for extended periods can lead to muscle fatigue and strain.
- Repetitive Movements: Activities that involve frequent bending, lifting, or twisting can strain the muscles.
- Improper Lifting: Lifting heavy objects incorrectly can put excessive stress on the back muscles and lead to strains.
- Sudden Movements: Quick or abrupt movements, such as twisting, bending, or turning, can overstretch the muscles.
- Weak Core Muscles: Weak abdominal and back muscles can’t properly support the spine, leading to increased risk of strain.
Symptoms of Muscle Strain in the Spine
- Localized Pain: Pain in the lower back, neck, or shoulders, which worsens with movement or pressure on the muscles.
- Muscle Spasms: Sudden involuntary muscle contractions leading to stiffness and pain.
- Stiffness: Limited range of motion and difficulty moving the affected area.
- Muscle Tenderness: Sensitivity and tenderness in the muscles surrounding the spine.
- Swelling: Inflammation around the affected muscles, which can cause mild swelling.
