Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) refers to discomfort or pain that occurs in the pelvic region, specifically around the area between the hips and lower spine. This pain can result from various factors, including instability in the pelvic joints, muscle imbalances, or underlying musculoskeletal issues.

Causes of Pelvic Girdle Pain
  • Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain: Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause the pelvic ligaments to relax, leading to instability in the pelvic joints, which can result in pain.
  • Muscle Imbalances: Weakness or tightness in pelvic floor muscles, core muscles, or surrounding hip muscles can contribute to instability in the pelvic girdle.
  • Trauma or Injury: Past injuries, fractures, or accidents involving the pelvis or surrounding areas can lead to long-term pain and dysfunction in the pelvic region.
  • Arthritis: Degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis can affect the pelvic joints, leading to stiffness, inflammation, and pain.
  • Postural Issues: Poor posture or prolonged sitting can put strain on the pelvic area, leading to discomfort.
Symptoms of Pelvic Girdle Pain
  • Localized Pain: Pain felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and/or around the pubic bone.
  • Radiating Pain: Discomfort that radiates into the thighs, groin, or lower abdomen.
  • Instability: Sensation of instability or a “looseness” in the pelvic area.
  • Pain During Movement: Discomfort worsens with movement, walking, climbing stairs, or standing for extended periods.
  • Pain During Pregnancy: In pregnant women, pain often worsens during activities that involve weight-bearing or moving from sitting to standing.
